“ Two and a half years ago when my girlfriend’s Father was diagnosed with cancer, and was gone six weeks later. At the same time as her Mum was going through chemo herself. Thankfully her Mum is now 100% in the clear, but I’m sure you can imagine the devastating impact losing a husband and father has had on a family that I regard as my own.

One of my closest friends battled cancer two years ago for the second time and she’s only in her 50s. Another close family member has also been affected in the last few months. Thankfully they have both completely recovered.

I have seen firsthand how deeply distressing it is for someone to be diagnosed with cancer. It has a profound impact on you. It’s an experience I would not wish anyone to go through.

Recently three greats of music and screen have passed away due to cancer. The iconic David Bowie, acclaimed actor Alan Rickman and national treasure Terry Wogan.

Cancer is frighteningly common. The majority of people know someone who’s been affected by this deadly group of diseases. There are currently 2.5 MILLION people living with cancer in the UK. That number is predicted to increase by 1 MILLION over the next decade. More than 1,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer EVERY DAY in the UK by the end of 2016. These are very scary statistics indeed.

I have seen the support Macmillan nurses and counselors provide for those dealing with cancer. They’re on the front line doing what must be an impossibly difficult job.

They provide a lifeline at a time when people are distressed, frightened and confused. In the darkest of places, they are True Coaches that bring some real Light. I therefore genuinely feel compelled to do what I can to help.
